Iglooghost and Daisy* Release First Album as “Cyst”
Powerhouse couple and longtime collaborators Iglooghost and Daisy* (formerly known as BABii)’s September debut album “ᲘᲘ” (pronounced as, and hereby referred to as “Rabbit”) expands upon the cryptic, grimy Iglooghost universe introduced in his latest work “Tidal Memory Exo”. Tidal Memory Exo was presented to listeners as a world-building experience. The album depicts an post-apocalyptic alternate reality where a geomagnetic storm has isolated a seaside town in England, never-before-seen prehistoric sea life have washed ashore, and “people began picking up all this ancient, sticky stuff, like old artefacts from the beach beats and flipping them for profit … making these pirate transmission radios and playing this weird music.” As proof of concept, check out a webpage from the “alternative internet network hosted on secret oil-rig servers”: Exoportal.
“Tidal Memory Exo is an album I made while living in a rust-ridden flooded squat in a weird UK seaside town. The area has been in an endless storm, causing strange otherworldly primordial garbage to be washed to shore. It’s basically only populated by rogue junk-hoarding scrap weirdos right now. I’ve been trying to get involved in the music scene that’s bubbling up locally. There’s lots of weird new mutated genres and illegal radio stations popping up – completely isolated from the rest of the country because of this massive storm. They don’t really like me, but I sort of wormed my way in and finally got this album together. Tunes about oceanic scum, illegal teletext transmissions, & the prehistoric trilobite angels lurking in the sewers.”
The band “Cyst” was first introduced to listeners in track 5 of Tidal Memory Exo, “Spawn01”. Shortly after the album release, Iglooghost confirmed that new music from Cyst would release in the future. Creating music behind the scenes, the duo have finally released their debut album “Rabbit”. The band describes the album’s nostalgia-driven focus as “a really brief moment where weirdo hip hop and IDM crossed paths at the very start of the millennium”, approached with “little to no nostalgia-baiting”. Through Rabbit, the two strike a balance between pulling from electronica past and expanding on electronica future without boxing their sound into fitting current electronic or hip-hop production trends. It was an additional goal of Cyst’s to sonically separate themselves from their respective solo work, edging away from dense futuristic synthesizers and honing in on 00s-influenced outsider beats. Lyrically, the album tackles the struggles of the artists’ newfound roles as parents, turning seemingly mundane or stressful moments into comedic musings.
